THE RULE THAT MATTERS MOST
For six to ten weeks a year, a perfectly healthy tapped block reads below band by design.
1 · THE BAND IS SUSPENDED, NOT SUPPLEMENTED
The prime tapped band for rubber is 0.78 to 0.90. The wintering trough is 0.55 to 0.70.
Those do not overlap. So for six to ten weeks a year, a perfectly healthy tapped block reads below band by design.
A block reading 0.62 in March has not lost 0.2 of health. It has dropped its leaves, which is what the species does.
So we suspend the stand age band inside a block's wintering window. Not soften it, not annotate it. The wintering stage table becomes the band for that period, and no below band finding fires.
This is the single biggest source of false stress alerts on rubber, and it is the reason estates stop trusting their dashboards. Two seasons of red screens every February and the team stops looking.

In Peninsular Malaysia the window runs February to March, extending into early April in some clones and in the northern states. Sabah and Sarawak run later and less synchronised, because the equatorial rainfall pattern is less seasonal.
Trough depth depends on the clone and on how completely the tree defoliates.
3 · THREE THINGS THE SUSPENSION DOES NOT DO
It does not stop the above band finding. A mature block sitting at plateau in the middle of its own wintering window has not wintered on schedule. That is a real finding, not the absence of one. It usually means a clone that winters later, a regional shift, or a planting and clone record that does not match the tree actually in the ground. Wintering is not optional on mature Hevea, so its absence is information.
It does not follow the calendar. The suspension is per block and follows that block's own observed leaf fall. A Sarawak block and a Kedah block are not suspended in the same weeks.
It does not excuse a failure to recover. A dip that does not climb back out is still a finding. The suspension excuses the trough, never the failure to climb out of it. Recovery past ten weeks against a normal six to eight is our powdery mildew signal.
4 · WE REFUSE THE ANOMALY VIEW ENTIRELY IN THAT WINDOW
Year on year comparison is our most useful tool on rubber for ten and a half months of the year. Inside the wintering window we state no anomaly figure at all, and we say why.
Wintering does not fall in the same weeks every year. It shifts by clone, it runs later in the northern states, and East Malaysia is later still. So the same calendar week can be bare leaf fall one year and full canopy the next.
A calendar aligned comparison across that boundary measures the shift in wintering timing, not the health of the block. It can report a minus 0.20 anomaly on a block that is doing exactly what it should.
A figure that may be entirely an artefact of timing is worse than no figure, and a caution attached to it does not fix that.
This is not missing data. The question the anomaly answers cannot be asked until the two years are aligned on the same event, and calendar week does not align them. A future version may anchor on each block's own observed leaf fall onset, which would let the comparison run through the window. Until then, the refusal is the honest answer.
5 · THE BIGGEST CAUSE OF A YIELD DROP IS INVISIBLE FROM ORBIT
Move a block from d/2 to d/3 and it produces less latex the following week. Open a new panel and it produces differently from one late in the previous panel.
Neither change is visible from space. The canopy looks identical. So the satellite offers no correction, and the drop reads as a stress signal when it is a management decision.
A rubber yield comparison names its panel and its tapping system, or it is not a comparison. A block either side of a panel change is two blocks as far as yield is concerned. That applies to every minus 15 percent and minus 25 percent latex trigger in our guides, including tapping panel dryness and potassium.
This is a yield rule. It does not govern index comparison, which is set by wintering and stand age. Filing it next to the NDVI bands would make it read as an index rule, and it would be wrong.
And here is the part most vendors would leave out. Tapping frequency and panel position are recorded as free text scout notes, not as fields. So we cannot enforce this and we do not claim to. We show the panel and the system alongside the comparison where a scout has recorded them, and leave the judgement to you. Where nothing has been recorded, we show the comparison with the gap named rather than suppressing it.
An unrecorded tapping change is a reason for doubt, not proof of one. Doubt gets named. An artefact gets withheld. Those are different things and we treat them differently.
6 · NDVI SATURATES FOR THE WHOLE TAPPING LIFE
From canopy closure at year five or six, NDVI stops discriminating on rubber. A higher reading does not mean a healthier block.
That covers everything from closure onward, which is the entire productive life of the stand. We switch to NDRE or EVI, and we raise no above band finding on a saturated reading.
The honest caveat is the same one we carry on oil palm. We publish no NDRE band to read a post saturation value against, so that question currently goes to a scout rather than to the index. A known gap, stated rather than hidden.

Hilly and coastal lowland have their own tables. On slopes, shaded pixels read 0.02 to 0.05 lower than exposed ones at low sun angles, which is small because Malaysia sits between one and seven degrees north, and which cancels out entirely when you compare a pixel to itself over time.
Beyond 25 years we publish no band, because NDVI alone cannot separate age decline from disease. We resolve it from block history or we say so.
7 · THREE LEAF FALLS THAT ARE NOT WINTERING

Two things worth knowing here.
Corynespora and Pestalotiopsis produce the same satellite pattern. We cannot separate them from orbit and we say so. Laboratory confirmation is the only certain method.
Powdery mildew is diagnosed by the shape of the recovery rather than the shape of the drop. Normal refoliation takes six to eight weeks. Past ten and you have a finding.
8 · TAPPING PANEL DRYNESS IS DIAGNOSED BY WHAT LOOKS FINE
The tell for TPD is that the canopy stays healthy. Latex flow drops on individual trees, the panel dries, and from above nothing has changed at all.
NDRE picks up a slow whole block decline over 12 to 24 months, earlier than NDVI does, but at the individual tree level this is not resolvable at Sentinel scale and we use scout records.
It is not curable. It is managed by resting the panel for three to six months, dropping tapping intensity, and suspending stimulation for at least six months on prone blocks.
9 · A CIRCLE OF DEAD TREES IS A WEATHER EVENT
Lightning kills a circular cluster of five to fifteen trees through root grafts. The strike tree dies first and the neighbours follow over the following weeks as the ground current damage shows.
So mark the whole circle for felling, not just the strike tree.
The pattern is what tells you. A circular expanding patch near an old stump is white root disease and moves month to month. A circular cluster that appeared at once after a storm is lightning and will not spread.
10 · THE FIELD WALK
Four to five hundred trees a hectare on a 25 to 30 year cycle, so you cannot look at every tree every visit.
Monthly through the immature phase and prime tapping. Every two weeks from wintering through refoliation. Within 48 hours of a storm. A root disease sweep every quarter along old stump lines and block boundaries, because root diseases enter from stumps at the boundary and move inward.
At each stop, ten consecutive trees along one line. Five steps in a fixed order: the stand from the row end before you get close, then leaf colour and Whorl 2, then trunk and tapping panel from ground to fork, then root collar on suspects, then latex flow.
Whorl 2 is the second whorl from the top, fully expanded, three to four months old. Twenty trees per block every third month for tissue analysis.
One safety instruction we would rather over communicate. Do not scout during lightning. Rubber blocks are the tallest structure in many Malaysian landscapes.
11 · WHAT WE WILL NOT TELL YOU
Black stripe has no satellite signal. Neither does bark scale. Calcium has no direct signal. Phosphorus has no strong one. Magnesium does not show until it is severe. Termites are not detectable at Sentinel scale on mature stands. Pink disease rarely resolves as an individual event.
On a five nutrient leaf report we name the most deficient nutrient and refuse to rate the rest, because the critical level system only works near the optimum. Two of the four tissue tiers never resolve at all. Marginal does not, because the transition is not sharp. High does not either, because no source states what High means or what to do about it, and a rating with no consequence is not a verdict.
Our tissue bands are generic and carry no site, soil, clone, age or season qualifier, because no published Malaysian source supplies one. Scoping them would need the RRIM clone group tables. Until those are in hand the generic ranges stay, and they stay marked as generic. That is a real limit, not a formality.
